What does Romans 8:39 mean?
What is the meaning of Romans 8:39?

Neither height nor depth

“neither height nor depth,” (Romans 8:39)

• Paul selects the vastest vertical extremes imaginable—soaring “height” and plunging “depth”—to say that no position in the universe can hide, diminish, or outrun God’s love.

Psalm 139:7-10 pictures the same truth: if we “ascend to the heavens” or “make our bed in Sheol,” God is already there.

Ephesians 3:17-19 prays that we grasp “how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,” confirming that these dimensions are meant to reassure, not intimidate.

Nor anything else in all creation

“nor anything else in all creation,” (Romans 8:39)

• After naming every conceivable threat (vv. 35-38), Paul sweeps in every remaining possibility. If it was created, it can’t undo the Creator’s affection.

Colossians 1:16-17 reminds us that “all things were created through Him and for Him… and in Him all things hold together,” so nothing He sustains can rise up and sever His children from Him.

Revelation 4:11 celebrates that all things exist by His will, placing them under His authority, not over His promises.

Will be able to separate us

“will be able to separate us” (Romans 8:39)

• The verb points to capacity: nothing has the power or ability to cut the believer loose.

• Jesus says the same in John 10:28-29—no one can snatch His sheep from His hand or the Father’s hand.

1 Peter 1:5 adds that we are “protected by the power of God through faith,” doubling the security.

From the love of God

“from the love of God” (Romans 8:39)

• The love in view is God’s settled, covenant commitment, first declared in Jeremiah 31:3—“I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

Ephesians 2:4-5 stresses that this love acted when we were “dead in our trespasses,” proving it does not depend on our performance.

1 John 3:1 marvels, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” That family bond cannot be revoked.

That is in Christ Jesus our Lord

“that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39)

• The location of this love is a Person. All saving blessings are “in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3-4); outside Him there is no such guarantee, but in Him there is unbreakable security.

John 15:9 shows Jesus rooting the disciples in the Father’s love: “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Remain in My love.”

Galatians 2:20 personalizes it: the Son of God “loved me and gave Himself for me,” sealing the believer into His own story.

summary

Romans 8:39 piles up every spatial extreme, every created thing, and every imagined threat to declare them powerless against God’s covenant love. That love originates with the Father, is displayed and secured in Christ, and envelops every believer forever. Because the Savior’s grip is stronger than any adversary’s pull, we live, serve, and suffer in unshakable confidence that nothing—now or ever—can separate us from Him.
