What does silence show about God's power?
What does "no one dared to utter a word" teach about God's authority?

Setting the Scene (Matthew 22:46)

“And no one was able to answer Him a word, and from that day on no one dared to question Him any further.”

What Prompted the Silence

• Religious leaders had tested Jesus with tricky questions about taxes, resurrection, and the Law (vv. 15-40).

• Jesus answered flawlessly, then asked His own question about Messiah being “David’s Lord” (vv. 41-45).

• His single, penetrating question exposed their shallow theology and self-confidence.

What the Silence Reveals about God’s Authority

• Absolute mastery of truth

– Jesus’ question revealed Scripture’s depth in a way human wisdom could not counter (cf. Isaiah 55:8-9).

• Moral authority that overrules position

– High-ranking scholars fell mute before a Galilean carpenter (cf. Job 40:4-5 “I place my hand over my mouth”).

• Judicial authority that ends the debate

– When the Judge speaks, argument ceases; the courtroom is settled (cf. Hebrews 4:13).

• Authority borne of holiness

– Confronted with divine purity, humans instinctively hush (cf. Isaiah 6:5; Revelation 1:17).

• Fear-inducing sovereignty

– “No one dared” points to awe that borders on dread; questioning God’s incarnate Son suddenly felt unsafe (cf. Luke 20:40; Mark 12:34).

Why Their Lips Were Sealed

1. Intellectual Defeat

– Every objection had been answered; further challenge promised only deeper embarrassment.

2. Exposure of Motives

– Jesus had unmasked their hypocrisy; speaking again risked further revelation (cf. John 3:20-21).

3. Recognition of Greater Authority

– Even if not fully admitting His deity, they sensed divine backing behind His words (cf. John 7:46 “No one ever spoke like this man!”).

4. Providential Timing

– God restrained them until the appointed hour of the cross; their silence advanced His redemptive plan (cf. Acts 2:23).

Lessons for Believers Today

• Approach Scripture with reverent humility; its Author still silences the proud and enlightens the meek.

• Trust the sufficiency of God’s word in every controversy; truth, not volume, carries the day.

• Let Christ’s authority govern every sphere—thought life, family, work, church—because He alone ends all debates.

• Cultivate holy fear; awestruck silence before God is often the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

• Proclaim with confidence; the same Lord who silenced opponents empowers His people to speak when He wills (Acts 4:31), and to remain silent when that testifies most loudly (1 Peter 2:23).

Supporting Passages

Luke 20:40: “And they did not dare to question Him any further.”

How can we apply the unity seen in Joshua 10:21 to our church?
