What is God's grace and compassion?
What does it mean that God is "gracious and compassionate"?

Center Verse

Psalm 145:8

“The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and great in loving devotion.”

Seeing the Words in Hebrew

• Gracious – ḥannûn: overflowing with undeserved favor

• Compassionate – raḥûm: deeply moved by the needs and pains of His people, like a tender parent

What “Gracious” Means

• God freely gives what we could never earn (Ephesians 2:4-5).

• His gifts are generous and abundant—salvation, daily provisions, spiritual strength (James 1:17).

• Grace is extended before we even ask (Romans 5:8).

• He remains gracious even when we fail, offering restoration (1 John 1:9).

What “Compassionate” Means

• He feels with us—He “remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:13-14).

• Jesus embodies this compassion, weeping at Lazarus’ tomb (John 11:35) and healing the sick (Matthew 14:14).

• His compassion moves Him to act, not merely to sympathize (Mark 1:40-41).

• Because Christ intercedes, we “receive mercy and find grace” at His throne (Hebrews 4:15-16).

The Two Traits Together

• Grace answers our guilt; compassion answers our grief.

• He removes what condemns us (sin) and relieves what burdens us (sorrow).

• Both attributes flow from His covenant name revealed in Exodus 34:6—unchanging across both Testaments (Nehemiah 9:17; Jonah 4:2).

Practical Encouragements

• Confidence in Prayer

– Approach God expecting favor, not reluctance (Romans 8:32).

• Repentance without Fear

– His grace outweighs our failures; His compassion meets our weakness (Psalm 86:5).

• Imitating His Heart

– Show the same grace and compassion to others (Colossians 3:12-13).

• Hope in Trials

– Affliction never has the last word; His compassionate purposes stand firm (James 5:11).

Summing Up

The LORD’s graciousness means He freely gives; His compassion means He deeply cares. Together they reveal a God who both pardons our sin and binds up our wounds—always faithful, always near.

How can we remember God's 'wonders' in our daily lives?
