What is associating with the lowly?
What does it mean to "associate with the lowly" in modern society?

Root of the Command

“Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with the lowly. Do not be conceited.” (Romans 12:16)

Paul places three imperatives side-by-side:

• Live harmoniously.

• Reject pride.

• Move toward those considered “lowly” rather than away from them.

Together they paint a picture of deliberately choosing humble company and humble attitudes.

What “Lowly” Means

• Socially undervalued—people lacking wealth, status, education, or influence.

• Circumstantially burdened—the sick, elderly, disabled, unemployed, single parents.

• Spiritually overlooked—new believers, doubters, those wrestling with sin.

• Culturally marginalized—immigrants, racial minorities, the homeless, prisoners.

To “associate” (Greek: synapago—be carried along with) is deeper than a moment of charity; it is sustained relationship, identification, and shared life.

Patterns from Jesus’ Life

Luke 5:30-32 – Ate with tax collectors and sinners.

John 4:7-26 – Engaged a Samaritan woman with dignity.

Mark 10:13-16 – Welcomed children others tried to shoo away.

Matthew 8:1-3 – Touched a leper before healing him.

The King models proximity, compassion, and honor toward people society downgrades.

Guarding Against Pride

Proverbs 3:34 – “He mocks the mockers but gives grace to the humble.”

1 Peter 5:5 – “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another.”

When pride surfaces, we instinctively gravitate upward; humility frees us to move downward in service.

Practical Expressions Today

• Invite neighbors with limited means for a meal.

• Offer childcare to a single mom so she can rest or attend church.

Workplace

• Share lunch with the custodian; learn his story.

• Mentor an entry-level employee without expecting advancement credit.

Church

• Sit with the newcomer no one knows.

• Volunteer in ministries that lack visibility—nursery, shut-in visitation, prison correspondence.

Community

• Regularly visit a nursing home.

• Support local addiction-recovery groups, not just financially but in person.

Online

• Engage respectfully with small-following voices rather than pursuing platform-building alliances alone.

Related Scriptures

James 2:1-4 – Warning against favoritism toward the wealthy.

Philippians 2:3-4 – “In humility consider others more important than yourselves.”

Personal Heart Checkpoints

• Do I instinctively seek friendships that advance my status?

• How often do my calendar and budget intersect with people who cannot repay me?

• When I serve, do I highlight it on social media or quietly persevere?

Blessings of Obedience

• Deeper understanding of Christ’s servant heart (John 13:14-17).

• Unity within the body—barriers crumble when status fades (Ephesians 2:14-16).

• A credible gospel witness—love for “the least” authenticates our message (Matthew 25:40).

To associate with the lowly today means choosing proximity, solidarity, and friendship with those our culture sidelines, mirroring the humble mercy we have received in Christ.
