What is pursuing virtue and harmony?
What does it mean to "pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace"?

Verse in Focus

“Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” (2 Timothy 2:22)

Flee and Pursue: The Two-Part Command

• “Flee” is an urgent word—drop everything and run from temptations that once felt exciting but now endanger your soul (Genesis 39:12; 1 Corinthians 6:18).

• “Pursue” pictures an athlete leaning forward at full speed; it is intentional, vigorous, and ongoing (Philippians 3:12-14).

• We don’t merely avoid sin; we actively chase after the character of Christ.

Pursuing Righteousness

• Live in line with God’s unchanging standard, revealed in Scripture (Psalm 119:9).

• Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

• Walk in obedience even when no one is watching (Proverbs 11:3).

• Daily habits:

– Measure choices against God’s Word.

– Confess and forsake sin quickly (1 John 1:9).

– Surround yourself with voices that reinforce holiness (Proverbs 13:20).

Pursuing Faith

• Faith is confident trust in God’s character and promises (Hebrews 11:1).

• It grows as we hear and meditate on the Word (Romans 10:17).

• Expressed by:

– Praying expectantly (Mark 11:24).

– Obeying before seeing results (James 2:17).

– Remembering past answers to prayer (Psalm 77:11).

• Faith is not a feeling; it is choosing to lean on the Lord when sight or emotions waver (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Pursuing Love

• Love (agapē) is self-sacrificing, others-focused, sourced in God Himself (1 John 4:7-8).

• Mandated as the greatest command after loving God (Matthew 22:37-39).

• Described in detail in 1 Corinthians 13—patient, kind, humble, forgiving.

• Practical pursuit:

– Speak words that build up (Ephesians 4:29).

– Serve without expecting repayment (Luke 6:35).

– Forgive quickly, as Christ forgave you (Colossians 3:13).

Pursuing Peace

• Peace is not mere absence of conflict; it is the wholeness God imparts (John 14:27).

• Begins vertically—peace with God through Christ (Romans 5:1).

• Extends horizontally—“If it is possible…live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18).

• Cultivated by:

– Releasing anxiety to God in prayer (Philippians 4:6-7).

– Refusing gossip and divisive talk (Proverbs 16:28).

– Acting as a peacemaker (Matthew 5:9).

Together with Those Who Call on the Lord

• Pursuit is communal, not solitary. We run alongside believers whose hearts are pure.

• Mutual encouragement guards against isolation and drift (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Accountability helps us correct course quickly (Galatians 6:1-2).

Daily Steps to Keep the Chase Alive

1. Morning: read a short passage, note one action step for righteousness.

2. Throughout the day: breathe quick prayers of trust to strengthen faith.

3. Look for one concrete way to show Christlike love before bedtime.

4. End the day by surrendering worries to God, resting in His peace.

God calls every believer to an energetic, lifelong chase. As we flee from the fleeting and run hard after righteousness, faith, love, and peace, we find ourselves steadily conformed to the image of Christ and ready for every good work (2 Timothy 2:21).
