What is true validation by the Lord?
What does "approved, but whom the Lord commends" teach about true validation?

The Verse in Focus

“For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.” 2 Corinthians 10:18

Setting the Scene

• Corinth was buzzing with self-styled leaders measuring one another by flash, eloquence, and human credentials (2 Corinthians 10:12).

• Paul reminds them—and us—that flashy résumés mean nothing if heaven is unimpressed.

Counterfeit Validation

• Self-commendation: talking ourselves up, posting achievements, angling for likes.

• Peer-commendation: letting friends, culture, or even church circles set the bar.

• Number-based approval: fixating on followers, salary, title, or ministry size.

These feel good, yet Scripture says they are “without understanding” (10:12).

What “Approved” Really Means

• Greek dokimos—metals tested by fire and proven genuine.

• The test is conducted by God; He alone declares the metal pure (Romans 14:12).

Only the Lord’s Commendation Counts

1 Corinthians 4:4-5 — “The one who examines me is the Lord… each will receive his praise from God.”

Proverbs 27:2 — “Let another praise you, and not your own mouth.”

Romans 2:29 — “…whose praise is not from men, but from God.”

Galatians 1:10 — “If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Matthew 25:21 — “Well done, good and faithful servant.” The affirmation that matters.

Why Self-Praise Fails

• It blinds us to sin (Jeremiah 17:9).

• It breeds comparison and envy (James 3:16).

• It collapses under divine scrutiny (Luke 16:15).

Living for the Lord’s Commendation

1. Examine motives daily (Psalm 139:23-24).

2. Let Scripture set the standard (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

3. Serve quietly, trusting God to see (Matthew 6:4).

4. Celebrate others’ wins—true humility invites God’s favor (James 4:6).

5. Keep eternity in view; rewards are “kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4).

Practical Heart-Checks

• Would I still do this if no one knew?

• Am I content with God’s “Well done,” even if people misunderstand?

• Do my words draw attention to Christ or to me?

Results of Seeking God’s Approval

• Freedom from performance pressure (John 8:36).

• Steady joy that outlasts applause (Philippians 4:4).

• Fruit that endures into eternity (John 15:16).

• A clear conscience before the only Judge who matters (Hebrews 4:13).

Encouragement for Today

Human applause fades, trends shift, and self-promotion exhausts. The smile of God never dimishes. Anchor your worth in the One whose commendation is eternal, and you will stand approved—tested, proven, and truly validated.

How does 2 Corinthians 10:18 emphasize the importance of God's approval over self-praise?
