What leadership traits lack here?
What leadership qualities are missing in the "elders" and "princes" mentioned here?

Text in Focus

“The LORD brings this charge against the elders and princes of His people: ‘You have devoured the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.’ ” (Isaiah 3:14)

What We Notice Right Away

The charge is not vague. God names specific actions that betray wrong attitudes:

• “Devoured the vineyard” – abused what belonged to God and His people.

• “The plunder of the poor is in your houses” – enriched themselves at the expense of the vulnerable.

These clues reveal the qualities that should have been present—but are glaringly absent.

Missing Leadership Qualities

• Integrity

– Leaders are to be “above reproach” (Titus 1:7).

– Instead, these leaders consume what they should protect.

• Justice

– God requires rulers to “defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:8-9).

– They steal from the poor rather than defend them.

• Servant-hearted Stewardship

– Rulers are called “ministers of God… for your good” (Romans 13:4).

– They serve themselves, not those entrusted to them.

• Compassion

Micah 6:8: “to love mercy.”

– Mercy is absent; exploitation reigns.

• Humility

– Leaders should “clothe yourselves with humility” (1 Peter 5:5).

– Their pride is obvious in using power for personal gain.

• Fear of God

– “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Psalm 111:10).

– Their disregard for God’s standards shows a lack of reverence.

• Accountability

Hebrews 13:17 reminds leaders they “will give an account.”

– These princes and elders act as though no reckoning is coming.

• Protective Oversight

– Shepherd imagery: leaders “guard the flock” (Acts 20:28).

– Instead they become predators within the flock.

The Contrast: God’s Design for Leaders

Scripture paints a different picture of godly leadership:

• David shepherded Israel “with integrity of heart” (Psalm 78:72).

• Nehemiah refused the governor’s food allowance so the people would not be burdened (Nehemiah 5:14-18).

• Jesus, the perfect model, “did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28).

Takeaway for Today

Whenever leaders—whether in family, church, workplace, or government—lack integrity, justice, servant-hearted stewardship, compassion, humility, fear of God, accountability, and protective oversight, the same indictment God spoke through Isaiah still stands. The passage invites every leader to weigh his or her heart against God’s unchanging standard and to seek by His grace the qualities these elders and princes tragically ignored.
