What modern "gods" do we unknowingly serve?
How can we identify modern-day "gods" that we might unknowingly serve?

The Foundational Verse

“You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3)

What Scripture Means by “gods”

- Anything—person, pursuit, possession, or pleasure—that competes with the Lord for first place in our hearts

- Not only carved idols; also invisible loyalties that quietly shape decisions, affections, and priorities (Colossians 3:5; 1 John 5:21)

Why Hidden Idols Matter

- They steal the exclusive devotion God deserves (Deuteronomy 6:5)

- They fracture fellowship with Him (Isaiah 42:8)

- They enslave rather than satisfy (Jeremiah 2:13; John 8:34)

Four Diagnostic Tests

1. Priority Test

• Where does my mind drift when I have nothing else to do?

• What determines my calendar and budget before anything else?

2. Trust Test

• What do I instinctively lean on for security—savings account, career, relationships?

Proverbs 3:5 warns against leaning on our own understanding.

3. Obedience Test

• When God’s Word collides with my desire, which one wins?

Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters.”

4. Emotional Test

• What can make or break my mood in a moment?

Psalm 16:11 points to fullness of joy in His presence, not elsewhere.

Common Contemporary gods

- Success and status: titles, platforms, follower counts (Luke 12:15)

- Wealth and possessions: “the deceitfulness of riches” (Matthew 13:22)

- Pleasure and comfort: entertainment, food, sexual indulgence (2 Timothy 3:4)

- Relationships: spouse, children, friends elevated above the Lord (Luke 14:26–27)

- Self: autonomy, image, personal rights (2 Timothy 3:2)

Simple Steps to Dethrone the Counterfeits

- Expose them: name them aloud in light of Scripture (Ephesians 5:11)

- Replace them: pursue wholehearted worship—prayer, Word, fellowship (Psalm 73:25–26)

- Surrender daily: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1)

- Guard vigilantly: “Flee from idolatry” (1 Corinthians 10:14)

Living in Single-Hearted Devotion

When Christ alone commands first love, lesser loyalties fall into rightful place. “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” (1 John 5:21)
