What stops us from speaking freely?
What barriers might prevent us from speaking "freely" as Paul did in Corinth?

Paul’s Open Heart in Corinth

“We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians. Our hearts are open wide.” (2 Corinthians 6:11)

Paul’s words paint a picture of fearless, affectionate candor. He lays everything on the table—no guarded speech, no half-truths, no hidden agenda. What kept him so unreserved, and what might keep us from doing the same?

Common Internal Barriers

• Fear of people’s opinions — “The fear of man brings a snare” (Proverbs 29:25).

• Shame over past sin — lingering guilt dulls confidence (Psalm 32:3-4).

• Self-reliance instead of Spirit-dependence — “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit” (Zechariah 4:6).

• Lack of gospel clarity — unsure people speak hesitantly (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

• Divided affections — love for the world silences love for Christ (1 John 2:15-16).

• Unconfessed sin — a clogged conscience muffles testimony (Psalm 66:18).

• Spiritual apathy — lukewarm hearts rarely overflow (Revelation 3:16).

Common External Barriers

• Hostile culture — Corinth’s moral chaos mirrors today’s (Acts 18:1-17).

• Threat of ridicule or persecution — “All who desire to live godly… will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).

• Relational fractures — tension closes mouths (Matthew 5:23-24).

• Institutional restraints — workplace or governmental policies can intimidate (Acts 4:18-20).

• Misrepresentation of Christianity — false stereotypes force believers onto the defensive (Matthew 5:11).

Scripture’s Remedies for Each Barrier

Fear → “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Shame → “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

Self-reliance → “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Gospel uncertainty → “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation.” (Romans 1:16)

Divided affections → “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2)

Unconfessed sin → “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive.” (1 John 1:9)

Apathy → “Fan into flame the gift of God.” (2 Timothy 1:6)

Hostility → “Rejoice insofar as you share in Christ’s sufferings.” (1 Peter 4:13)

Relational barriers → “As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18)

Institutional pressure → “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

Misrepresentation → “Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders… so that you may know how to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:5-6)

Encouragement to Speak Freely Today

• The same Spirit who emboldened Paul indwells every believer (Romans 8:11).

• The message we carry is God’s power, not ours (1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

• The love of Christ compels us; it is stronger than any social blockade (2 Corinthians 5:14).

• An open heart invites others to experience the Savior’s open arms—exactly what Corinth needed then and what our world needs now.

How can we 'open wide our hearts' to others in our community today?
