When to love or hate in life?
How can we discern when to "love" and when to "hate" in our lives?

Foundational Verse

“a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” (Ecclesiastes 3:8)

The Season for Love and Hate

• God’s Word is accurate and literal—this verse truly describes life’s rhythms.

• Love and hate are not random impulses; they each have an appointed “time” under God’s sovereign ordering of events (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

• Discernment is required so that each emotion serves God’s purposes rather than our own passions (James 1:19-20).

Scripture’s Portrait of Love

• Self-giving commitment to another’s good (John 13:34; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

• Commanded toward:

– God (Matthew 22:37).

– Neighbor (Matthew 22:39).

– Enemy (Matthew 5:44).

– Fellow believers (John 13:35).

• Love always seeks truth, purity, and edification (Ephesians 4:15; Philippians 1:9-10).

Scripture’s Portrait of Hate

• Moral revulsion against evil, not personal malice.

• Required toward:

– Sin and wickedness (Psalm 97:10; Proverbs 8:13; Romans 12:9).

– False teaching and destructive practices (Revelation 2:6).

• Expressed through righteous anger that leads to godly action, never to sinful retaliation (Ephesians 4:26-27).

Guidelines for Discerning Love or Hate

1. Identify the object.

• People bear God’s image; we love them.

• Sin, lies, oppression, and idolatry dishonor God; we hate them.

2. Compare the situation to Scripture.

• Does it align with holiness? Love it.

• Does it rebel against God? Hate it.

3. Examine motive.

• Is zeal driven by God’s glory or personal offense? (James 4:1-3)

4. Consider the fruit.

• Will the response build up, rescue, or restore? (Galatians 6:1)

• Or will it foster bitterness? (Hebrews 12:15)

5. Seek Spirit-given wisdom.

• Pray and listen; the Spirit teaches truth (John 16:13).

6. Act accordingly.

• Love: show kindness, patience, sacrificial service.

• Hate: reject, expose, and oppose evil while offering redemption to people trapped in it.

Practical Applications

• Love every person you meet; hate the sin that harms them.

• Love the truth of the gospel; hate distortions that lead souls astray (Galatians 1:8-9).

• Love justice and mercy; hate oppression and exploitation (Micah 6:8; Psalm 82:4).

• Love church unity; hate divisive gossip (Titus 3:10).

• Love God’s discipline that shapes you; hate the flesh that resists it (Hebrews 12:5-11; Romans 8:13).

Balancing Love and Hate in Daily Life

• Speak truth in love—confront sin gently but firmly (Ephesians 4:15; Galatians 6:1).

• Forgive personal wrongs even while opposing ongoing injustice (Romans 12:17-21).

• Guard your heart: righteous hate turns against evil; unrighteous hate turns against people (1 John 2:9-11).

• Let every expression—whether love or hate—reflect Christ, who loved sinners yet “hated lawlessness” (Hebrews 1:9).

Encouragement for the Journey

• Trust Scripture’s accuracy; it lights the path (Psalm 119:105).

• Rely on the Spirit for discernment; He will keep love pure and hate righteous.

• In every season, aim for God’s glory and your neighbor’s good—therein lies the right “time” for both love and hate.
