Which Scriptures warn against self-greatness?
What other Scriptures warn against seeking greatness for oneself?

Seeing What Happened on the Road

Mark 9:34 — “But they were silent, for on the way they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.”

• The disciples’ private debate exposes the human pull toward personal status.

• Jesus answers by redefining greatness as humble service (Mark 9:35).

Old Testament Voices Calling Us Downward

Proverbs 25:6-7 — “Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king… for it is better that he should say to you, ‘Come up here!’ than for you to be humiliated.”

Proverbs 27:2 — “Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.”

Psalm 131:1 — “My heart is not proud… I do not concern myself with great matters.”

Jeremiah 45:5 — “But as for you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them.”

Micah 6:8 — Walk “humbly with your God.”

Jesus Repeats the Warning

Matthew 18:3-4 — Childlike humility equals kingdom greatness.

Matthew 20:26-28 — “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… just as the Son of Man did not come to be served.”

Luke 14:8-11 — Choose the lowest seat: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled.”

Luke 18:9-14 — Pharisee vs. tax collector; the humble goes home justified.

Apostolic Echoes

Romans 12:3 — “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought.”

Galatians 5:26 — “Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying one another.”

Philippians 2:3-4 — “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride.”

Philippians 2:5-8 — Christ’s self-emptying is the pattern for believers.

James 4:6, 10 — “God opposes the proud… Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

1 Peter 5:5-6 — “Clothe yourselves with humility… that He may exalt you in due time.”

Putting Humility Into Practice

• Celebrate others’ successes instead of drawing attention to your own.

• Serve in unnoticed ways; leave the spotlight to God’s choosing.

• Speak of achievements only when necessary and always credit the Lord.

• Regularly remember Christ’s cross, the ultimate descent that became exaltation.

• Measure greatness by obedience and love, not by recognition or rank.
