Why are divination and sorcery banned?
Why does God forbid practices like "divination" and "sorcery" in Deuteronomy 18:10?

Foundational Verse

“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, or engages in witchcraft” (Deuteronomy 18:10).

God’s Holiness Demands Separation from Pagan Influence

• Israel was called to be “a people holy to the LORD” (Deuteronomy 7:6).

• Divination and sorcery were central to Canaanite religion; God’s people had to reject them to remain distinct (Leviticus 20:23).

Deuteronomy 18:12 adds, “Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD.” Holiness cannot mix with what God labels detestable.

Divination Competes with God’s Revelation

• Divination seeks hidden knowledge apart from God, yet “the secret things belong to the LORD” (Deuteronomy 29:29).

• God speaks through His prophets and, ultimately, through His Son (Hebrews 1:1-2). Resorting to occult methods says His word is insufficient.

Isaiah 8:19-20 contrasts mediums with “the law and the testimony”—only God’s word gives light.

Sorcery Opens a Door to Demonic Power

• Behind occult practices lurk real spiritual forces opposed to God (1 Corinthians 10:20).

Acts 16:16-18 shows a spirit of divination confronted by the name of Jesus, revealing a demonic source.

• God protects His people by forbidding contact with these powers (Ephesians 6:12).

These Practices Undermine Trust in God’s Sovereignty

• Seeking omens implies anxiety about the future; God calls His people to trust Him instead (Proverbs 3:5-6; Matthew 6:34).

• Consulting sorcery for control or advantage denies that “all things work together for good” under His wise hand (Romans 8:28).

They Lead People into Bondage, Not Freedom

Galatians 5:19-20 lists sorcery among “works of the flesh” that enslave.

2 Kings 21:6 shows King Manasseh’s decline into idolatry, cruelty, and national ruin after embracing occult practices.

• God’s commands protect from spiritual, emotional, and societal bondage.

God Provides a Better Way: The True Prophet and Word Made Flesh

Deuteronomy 18:15 immediately points to a coming Prophet like Moses—fulfilled in Jesus Christ (Acts 3:22-23).

• Instead of seeking hidden voices, believers are invited to heed the living Word (John 10:27).

• The Holy Spirit now guides “into all truth” (John 16:13), rendering occult shortcuts both unnecessary and dangerous.

Summary

God forbids divination and sorcery because they clash with His holiness, compete with His revelation, open doors to demonic influence, erode trust in His sovereignty, and enslave those who practice them. In place of these counterfeit sources, He offers the sure, life-giving guidance of His own Word and Spirit.
