Why avoid those who "signal with feet"?
Why is it important to recognize and avoid those who "signal with their feet"?

The Verse in Focus

Proverbs 6:12-15

“A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth, winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, and motions with his fingers. With deceit in his heart he devises evil; he continually sows discord. Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in an instant he will be shattered beyond recovery.”

Who Are Those Who “Signal with Their Feet”?

• Literally: people who use subtle body language—restless shifting, coded movements, secret gestures—to hide wicked intent.

• Spiritually: masters of double-speak; outwardly charming, inwardly scheming (cf. Psalm 55:21; Matthew 7:15).

• Socially: sowers of discord, rumor-spreaders, manipulators who test loyalties with half-steps and side glances before striking.

Why Recognize Them?

• God labels them “worthless” (Heb. belīyaʿal—utterly without profit). Taking Him at His Word means treating that label seriously.

• Their methods reveal their hearts (Luke 6:45). The hidden foot signals betray a deeper agenda than words alone disclose.

• Scripture warns that evil companionship “corrupts good morals” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Identifying the danger is the first safeguard.

• Ignoring the signs invites shared judgment: “Whoever walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20).

Why Avoid Them?

• Protection from moral infection

Proverbs 4:14-15: “Do not set foot on the path of the wicked… turn away and pass on.”

• Protection from spiritual dullness

– Continuous exposure blunts discernment (Hebrews 3:13).

• Protection from God’s disciplinary fallout

Proverbs 6:15 promises sudden calamity on the deceiver; association puts us in the blast radius (Numbers 16:26).

• Protection of witness and reputation

1 Thessalonians 5:22: “Abstain from every form of evil.” Distance preserves credibility and influence.

Practical Steps to Guard Your Walk

• Stay alert to non-verbal cues—uneasy shuffling when truth is spoken, covert gestures that rally gossip, quick retreats after incendiary remarks.

• Test speech against Scripture; if words and actions diverge, trust what the feet are saying.

• Set clear relational boundaries; be cordial without granting heart-level influence (Proverbs 22:24-25).

• Surround yourself with transparent believers whose walk and talk match (Philippians 3:17).

• Pray for the deceiver’s repentance while refusing to enable the deception (2 Timothy 2:25-26).

Recognizing and avoiding those who “signal with their feet” honors God’s warning, shields your character, and keeps your steps aligned with the straight path He lights before you (Psalm 119:105).
