Why observe God's laws and rules?
Why is it important to "observe" God's statutes and ordinances?

Key Verse

“For I am commanding you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live and multiply, and the LORD your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” (Deuteronomy 30:16)

What Are Statutes and Ordinances?

• Statutes: specific, fixed commands that reflect God’s moral nature (e.g., Exodus 20; Leviticus 18:5).

• Ordinances: judicial rulings and regulations that guide community life (e.g., Exodus 21–23).

Both reveal God’s character and define holy living for His people.

Why Observance Matters

• Affirms Love for God

– “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

– Obedience is the tangible proof of genuine devotion.

• Leads to Life and Blessing

– “Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the one who does them will live by them.” (Leviticus 18:5)

– God ties physical, spiritual, and communal flourishing to obedience.

• Maintains Covenant Relationship

– “Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.” (Deuteronomy 29:9)

– Observance sustains intimacy and fellowship with the Lord.

• Reveals God’s Wisdom to the World

– “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” (Deuteronomy 4:6)

– Obedient lives become a testimony of God’s superior ways.

• Safeguards the Community

– Protects against idolatry, injustice, and moral decay (Deuteronomy 12; 16).

– Establishes righteous standards that preserve social order.

• Sets God’s People Apart

– “You are to be holy to Me, for I, the LORD, am holy.” (Leviticus 20:26)

– Distinctive obedience marks believers as belonging to Him.

• Points Forward to Christ

– The Law is a tutor leading us to Messiah (Galatians 3:24).

– Christ perfectly kept every statute, enabling us to walk in newness of life (Romans 8:4).

How to Observe Today

• Study the Word diligently (Psalm 119:11).

• Depend on the Holy Spirit for power and guidance (Ezekiel 36:27; Galatians 5:16).

• Obey promptly, not selectively (James 1:22).

• Teach children and new believers (Deuteronomy 6:6–7).

• Engage in mutual accountability within the church (Hebrews 10:24–25).

Cautions Against Neglect

• Leads to spiritual dullness and drift (Hebrews 2:1).

• Invites discipline and loss of blessing (Deuteronomy 28:15–68; Hebrews 12:6).

• Robs joy and testimony (Psalm 32:3–4).

Encouraging Promises for Obedience

Deuteronomy 28:1–2 – blessings overtake the obedient.

Joshua 1:8 – success and prosperity through meditating on the Law.

Psalm 19:11 – “in keeping them there is great reward.”

John 14:21 – deeper revelation of Christ to those who obey.

1 John 5:3 – commands are “not burdensome” when motivated by love.

Culmination in Christ

Jesus fulfills the Law (Matthew 5:17) and writes it on believing hearts (Jeremiah 31:33). By grace, obedience becomes a joy rather than a burden, enabling God’s people to display His glory while awaiting the full blessing of His eternal kingdom.

How can we diligently teach God's commands to our children today?
