Why recall God's wins in tough times?
Why is it important to remember God's past victories in our current struggles?

Setting the Scene

“Once again there was fighting with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver’s beam.” (2 Samuel 21:19)

This verse flashes us back to an earlier triumph (1 Samuel 17). A new warrior, Elhanan, takes down a giant who bears the same terrifying description as the one David faced. The repetition of victory over a seemingly unbeatable foe is purposeful—it keeps Israel’s memory fresh: the God who conquered giants before is still conquering giants now.

Why God’s Past Victories Matter Today

• They prove His power has not faded.

• They anchor our faith when emotions wobble.

• They silence the enemy’s taunts with historical evidence.

• They propel us from paralyzing fear to confident action.

Layers of Encouragement in 2 Samuel 21:19

1. Same setting, same enemy name, same impossible weapon—yet another decisive win. God wants us to notice the pattern.

2. Elhanan is “the Bethlehemite,” from David’s own town. Victory is now communal, not just individual. When God delivers one believer, He equips others to follow.

3. “Once again there was fighting …” Trouble resurfaces, but so does God’s deliverance. Our battles may be recurring, but His faithfulness is relentless.

Patterns of God’s Faithfulness through Scripture

Exodus 14:13-14 – The Red Sea parting becomes Israel’s touchstone whenever fear spikes.

Joshua 4:6-7 – Twelve stones from the Jordan remind future generations, “The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD.”

Psalm 77:11 – “I will remember the works of the LORD; surely I will remember Your wonders of old.”

Lamentations 3:21-23 – Jeremiah drags a shattered nation back to hope by recalling that “His compassions never fail.”

Revelation 12:11 – Saints overcome “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” Past victories fuel present perseverance.

Practical Ways to Recall His Victories

• Keep a written “Jordan-stone” journal of answered prayers.

• Re-read personal highlight verses alongside their historical contexts.

• Share testimonies aloud in family or small-group settings; spoken memory strengthens hearing hearts (Romans 10:17).

• Sing songs rooted in biblical deliverance narratives; music embeds memory.

• Mark anniversaries of divine intervention and celebrate intentionally.

Living in Present Confidence

Remembering is not nostalgia; it is spiritual strategy. Every time God comes through, He is writing ammunition for the next confrontation. Giants may reappear, but each new Elhanan can step forward with fresh courage, knowing the outcome is already etched in Scripture: “The battle belongs to the LORD” (1 Samuel 17:47).
