Why support Christian leaders?
Why is it important for Christians to support those in spiritual leadership roles?

A Snapshot from Joshua 21:13

“Thus to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron—a city of refuge for the manslayer—along with its pasturelands, and Libnah with its pasturelands.”

God’s Provision for His Ministers

• The Levites, and specifically Aaron’s descendants, received no territorial inheritance (Numbers 18:20).

• Cities like Hebron, plus the surrounding pasturelands, were God’s way of saying, “My people will care for My priests.”

• This literal, historical arrangement establishes a timeless principle: those who serve the Lord’s flock are to be supported by that flock.

Why Supporting Spiritual Leaders Matters

• It’s obedience to a clear command—“The LORD commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should live from the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14).

• It frees leaders to focus on ministry instead of survival (Nehemiah 13:10-11).

• It fosters gratitude and unity within the body (Philippians 4:15-18).

• It honors the Lord, who Himself designed this system (Numbers 18:21; Deuteronomy 12:19).

Forms of Support We Can Offer Today

• Financial provision—regular giving, gifts, and resources (1 Timothy 5:17-18).

• Practical help—meals, childcare, maintenance, administrative aid (Galatians 6:10).

• Encouragement—notes, affirming words, celebrating victories (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

• Prayer—consistent intercession for their protection, wisdom, and joy (Ephesians 6:19-20).

• Respectful cooperation—making their leadership a joy, not a burden (Hebrews 13:17).

New Testament Echoes of the Joshua Pattern

Galatians 6:6—“The one who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.”

1 Timothy 5:17-18—Elders who labor in preaching and teaching are “worthy of double honor.”

1 Corinthians 9:13-14—Paul links temple priests’ support to modern ministry.

Hebrews 13:17—Obey your leaders so they can serve “with joy and not with grief.”

Blessings Linked to Supporting Leaders

• Spiritual fruit spreads—when leaders are strengthened, the whole church matures (Ephesians 4:11-16).

• God notices and rewards—“God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown toward His name” (Hebrews 6:10).

• A testimony to outsiders—healthy, cared-for leadership showcases Christ’s body functioning as designed (John 13:35).

Living Out the Principle

Joshua 21:13 reminds us that God literally carved out space for His priests. In the same spirit, carve out budget, time, and encouragement for today’s pastors, missionaries, teachers, and elders. When believers faithfully support their spiritual leaders, they participate in God’s age-old design—and everyone flourishes.

How can we apply the concept of 'cities of refuge' in our lives today?
