1‘If a man steals an ox, or a sheep, and kills or sells it; he shall restore (pay back) five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. 2If a thief is caught breaking in, and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed. 3If it happens in the daylight (when the sun is up), the defender is guilty of bloodshed; but anyone who steals must make full restitution; but if he has nothing, then he shall be sold to pay for his theft. 4If what is stolen is an animal that is found alive in his possession - whether an ox, donkey, or sheep - he must pay back double. 5‘If anyone allows their livestock to graze and to feed in a field or vineyard of another man; he shall make restitution from the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard. 6If fire breaks out, and spreads through thorn bushes, causing stacks of grain, or standing grain, or a field to be consumed by it; the one that started the fire shall surely make restitution. 7‘If a man gives his neighbor money or property for safekeeping, and it is stolen from the neighbor's house; the thief, if caught, must pay back double. 8If the thief is not found, then the owner of the house shall be brought before the judges, to determine if he has stolen his neighbor's goods. 9For all manner of disputes, whether it be illegal possession of an ox, donkey, sheep, clothing, or any manner of lost thing, which someone else claims to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whoever the judges find guilty, shall pay double to the harmed party. 10If a man gives his neighbor a donkey, ox, sheep, or any animal, to keep; and it dies, is injured, or taken away when no one saw it: 11Then he shall take an oath before the LORD, that he has not taken his neighbor's goods; and the owner of it shall accept this, and no restitution is required. 12But if it was indeed stolen, he shall make restitution to its owner. 13If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, then let him bring the remains as evidence, and he shall not make restitution for what was torn. 14And if anyone borrows an animal from his neighbor, and it is injured, or dies, in the absence of the owner, he shall surely make restitution. 15But if the owner of it was present, he shall not make restitution. If the animal was rented, the money paid for the hire covers the loss. 16‘And if a man seduces a maid that is not betrothed, and sleeps with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife. 17If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he still must pay money (the bride price) according to the dowry of virgins. 18‘You must not allow a witch (sorceress) to live. 19Whoever lies (engages in sex) with a beast shall surely be put to death. 20Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the LORD, shall be utterly destroyed. 21You shall not vex (mistreat) a sojourner (foreigner), nor oppress him; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 22You shall not afflict (exploit) any widow, or a fatherless child. 23If you do in any way, and they cry unto Me, I will surely hear their cry; 24And My wrath shall burn, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. 25If you lend money to any of My people who are in need among you, you shall not treat it like a business deal: you shall not charge him interest. 26If you at all take your neighbor's cloak as security, you shall return it to him by the time the sun goes down: 27For that is his only covering for his skin: what else shall he sleep in? And when he cries unto Me, I will hear; for I am gracious. 28You shall not revile (blaspheme) God, nor curse the ruler of your people. 29‘You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe fruits, and the outflow of your presses (granaries or vats): the firstborn of your sons shall you give unto Me. 30You shall do the same with your cattle and sheep: seven days it shall stay with the mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to Me. 31You are to be My holy people; so do not eat the meat of what is torn by wild animals; throw it to the dogs.
