1And Sarah lived to be a hundred twenty-seven years old. 2And Sarah died in Kiriath-arba, also named Hebron, in the land of Canaan; and Abraham mourned and wept for Sarah. 3And Abraham stood up from beside his dead wife, and said to the sons of Heth, 4“I am a stranger and a sojourner with you. Sell me a property here, so that I may bury my dead.” 5And the sons of Heth replied to Abraham, 6“Hear us, my lord: you are God’s chosen one among us; in the choice of our sepulchers (graves or tombs) bury your dead; none of us shall refuse to provide you a tomb, so that you may bury your dead.” 7And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, the descendants of Heth. 8And he said to them, “If you are willing to let me bury my dead here, hear me, and intercede with Ephron, son of Zohar, for me, 9That he may let me buy the cave of Machpelah that he owns, at the end of his field, that he will sell that property to me for whatever he says it is worth, as a burial place among you.” 10And Ephron, the Hittite, was sitting among the people of Heth; and he answered Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites, beside the gate to his city, 11“No, my lord, hear me: that field I give you, and the cave that is in it. In the presence of all my people, I give it to you. Bury your dead.” 12And Abraham bowed before the people of the land. 13And he replied to Ephron in the hearing of the people there, “But if you agree, I pray you, hear me: I will pay you for the field; accept the money from me, so that I may bury my dead there.” 14And Ephron answered Abraham, 15“My lord, listen to me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead.” 16And Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms; and he weighed out to Ephron the price in silver, that he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth: four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. 17And so the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, near Mamre - the field, the cave within it, and all the trees that were within its borders - 18Were deeded over o Abraham for a possession in the presence of all the Hittites, sons of Heth, at the city gate.19And after this, Abraham buried Sarah, his wife, in the cave of the field of Machpelah near Mamre: which is Hebron in the land of Canaan. 20And so that field, and the cave within it, were deeded by the sons of Heth to Abraham as a property for a burying place.
