2 Chronicles 6:16
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: 'You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk in My law as you have walked before Me.'
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel,

Solomon appeals to the covenant God who chose Israel from among the nations and bound Himself to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their descendants. Israel’s worship and monarchy rested upon the Lord’s faithfulness, not upon human achievement.

1Ki 8:26 And now, O God of Israel, please confirm what You promised…
2Sa 7:25 And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word…

keep for Your servant, my father David,

David had received the Lord’s covenant promise that his house and kingdom would endure before God. Solomon recognizes that the throne he occupies belongs ultimately to the Lord and depends upon God’s word to David.

1Ki 8:24 You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David.…
1Ch 17:23 And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken…

what You promised when You said:

God’s promises form the foundation of Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple. The Lord had already demonstrated His faithfulness by establishing David’s son on the throne and allowing the temple to be built.

2Sa 7:11-16 and have done since the day I appointed judges…
1Ch 17:10-14 and have done since the day I appointed judges…

‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel,

The Davidic dynasty continued through Solomon and his descendants until the exile. God’s larger promise reaches its permanent fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose kingdom has no end.

1Ki 9:5 then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever,…
Jer 33:17 For this is what the LORD says: David will never lack a man…

if only your descendants guard their way to walk in My law

Each king of David’s line remained responsible to obey the covenant law. Disobedient rulers brought judgment upon themselves and the nation, culminating in the loss of the earthly throne during the Babylonian exile.

Deu 17:18-20 When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write…
1Ki 2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways…

as you have walked before Me.’

David’s life, though marked by grievous sin, was characterized by repentance, faith, and wholehearted devotion to the Lord. David’s descendants were called to rule under God’s authority, anticipating the perfectly righteous reign of Christ.

1Ki 9:4 And as for you, if you walk before Me…
1Ki 15:5 For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD…

"Thou didst well, it was in thine heart." --2 CHRONICLES vi. 1-15. And this was a purpose which the man was not permitted to realize. It was a temple built in the substance of dreams, but never established in wood and stone. And God took the shadowy structure and esteemed it as a perfected pile. The sacred intention was regarded as a finished work. The will to build a temple was regarded as a temple built. And hence I discern the preciousness of all hallowed purpose and desire, even though it

Sanctification.
VI. Objections answered. I will consider those passages of scripture which are by some supposed to contradict the doctrine we have been considering. 1 Kings viii. 46: "If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near," etc. On this passage, I remark:-- 1. That this sentiment in nearly the same language, is repeated in 2 Chron. vi. 26, and in Eccl.

Entire Sanctification
By Dr. Adam Clarke The word "sanctify" has two meanings. 1. It signifies to consecrate, to separate from earth and common use, and to devote or dedicate to God and his service. 2. It signifies to make holy or pure. Many talk much, and indeed well, of what Christ has done for us: but how little is spoken of what he is to do in us! and yet all that he has done for us is in reference to what he is to do in us. He was incarnated, suffered, died, and rose again from the dead; ascended to heaven, and there

Chronicles
The comparative indifference with which Chronicles is regarded in modern times by all but professional scholars seems to have been shared by the ancient Jewish church. Though written by the same hand as wrote Ezra-Nehemiah, and forming, together with these books, a continuous history of Judah, it is placed after them in the Hebrew Bible, of which it forms the concluding book; and this no doubt points to the fact that it attained canonical distinction later than they. Nor is this unnatural. The book
