For we cannot do anything against the truth,

Paul’s apostolic authority was never a license to control the Corinthians or defend his own reputation. False apostles had questioned his ministry, yet Paul remained bound to the Gospel of Christ, who is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Any discipline, correction, or exercise of authority had to serve God’s revealed truth rather than personal advantage.

Paul desired the Corinthians’ spiritual strength and obedience, even if their maturity removed any need for him to demonstrate severe apostolic discipline (2 Corinthians 13:7, 9). The church advances through faithful submission to God’s Word, sound doctrine, and holy living. Christ’s servants are called to uphold the truth, defend it against error, and seek the restoration of God’s people.
