Elijah’s journey to the Jordan brings his final earthly ministry into view. The Jordan marked Israel’s entrance into the Promised Land under Joshua, and it now becomes the setting for the transition of prophetic leadership from Elijah to Elisha. The LORD directs Elijah’s steps, showing that his departure and Elisha’s succession unfold according to God’s purpose.

Elisha remains near Elijah not merely from personal affection, but because he recognizes God’s calling upon Elijah and desires to receive fully the ministry entrusted to him.

So the two of them went on.
