On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the king's command and edict were to be executed. On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but their plan was overturned and the Jews overpowered those who hated them. On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar,Adar, corresponding roughly to February or March, was the twelfth month of Israel’s religious year. Haman had chosen its thirteenth day by lot as the appointed time for the destruction of the Jews (Esther 3:7, 13). Instead, the date became the day on which God preserved His covenant people. The following day became the principal celebration of Purim, while the thirteenth is remembered as the day of fasting and deliverance.
