Bezalel and the skilled craftsmen followed the pattern God had given Moses on the mountain. The breastpiece was joined to the ephod and worn over the high priest’s heart, bearing the names of Israel’s twelve tribes before the Lord. It declared that the high priest represented the whole covenant people in his ministry. Its careful construction showed that access to God could not be approached according to human preference but only according to His revealed will.

Gold adorned the tabernacle furnishings and the high priest’s garments because it suited the glory and holiness of the God who dwelt among His people.
