"Son of man," He said to me, "I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me. To this very day they and their fathers have rebelled against Me. “Son of man,” He said to me,God addresses Ezekiel as a mortal man standing before the glory of the sovereign Lord. The title occurs more than ninety times in Ezekiel and continually reminds the prophet of his human weakness and dependence upon God. Jesus later used “Son of Man” of Himself, identifying with humanity while also fulfilling Daniel’s vision of the heavenly ruler who receives everlasting dominion (Daniel 7:13–14). Though Jerusalem had not yet fallen completely, many Judeans had already been deported, including Ezekiel himself. Exile did not mean that God had abandoned Israel; He continued to speak, warn, judge, and preserve a remnant according to His covenant promises. Amo 7:15 But the LORD took me from following the flock… to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me. Israel’s deepest crisis was not Babylon’s power but persistent rebellion against the Lord. Idolatry, injustice, false worship, and refusal to heed God’s prophets had violated the covenant. The people descended from Jacob had been called to belong to the Lord among the nations, yet they had adopted the sins of the nations around them. The rebellion of Ezekiel’s generation continued a long history reaching back through the wilderness, the period of the judges, and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Their fathers’ sins did not remove personal responsibility from those living in exile; each generation had continued the same resistance to God. Ezekiel’s ministry would expose that enduring unfaithfulness while also preparing the way for the Lord’s promised cleansing, new heart, and restored people.
