Though entrusted with visions and divine messages, Ezekiel remained a mortal man called to stand before a rebellious people. God appointed Ezekiel to a comparable spiritual duty among the exiles. He was responsible to proclaim God’s warning faithfully, regardless of whether Israel listened or refused. The watchman’s task was not to control the response of the people, but to deliver the warning entrusted to him. He was to receive God’s word and speak it as God gave it. The prophetic office required careful submission to divine revelation, for a false message could give dangerous assurance to people already facing judgment. Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you… and give them the warning from Me. God’s warnings were acts of mercy, giving sinners opportunity to repent before judgment fell. Ezekiel was to make clear that each person bore responsibility to turn from wickedness and obey the Lord.
