Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon

Jesus entered the ordinary workplace of Simon Peter, a Galilean fisherman whose life and calling would be transformed by Christ. Simon’s boat became the setting for public teaching and soon for a miraculous catch of fish. Jesus’ deliberate approach to Simon anticipates the disciple’s appointment as a leader among the apostles and his future calling to fish for people (Luke 5:10).

Simon responded to Jesus’ request after a fruitless night of fishing, offering his boat and labor to the Lord before he understood what Jesus would do. Moving from the shore provided space between Jesus and the crowd while the water and surrounding slopes helped carry His voice. Simon’s willing obedience in a small matter prepared him for the greater command and revelation that followed.

And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat.

Jewish teachers commonly sat when giving formal instruction, and Jesus taught with the authority of the One sent from the Father. From Simon’s boat, Jesus brought God’s word into the daily setting of fishermen, laborers, and families gathered along the Sea of Galilee. The boat that had yielded nothing during the night became a pulpit from which Christ fed the crowd with truth.
