Though the city lay desolate, the Lord had not abandoned His promises. His compassion reflects the fatherly mercy He shows toward those who fear Him and His faithfulness to the covenant made with Abraham and David. Christ reveals this compassion fully, bearing judgment for His people and securing the future restoration of all who belong to Him. Israel’s exile and Jerusalem’s ruin were not beyond God’s power or mercy. He governs both discipline and deliverance, and He acts according to His appointed purpose.
