Israel’s existence rested on God’s covenant mercy, not on its own strength or faithfulness. In a time of national devastation and apparent abandonment, the prayer rests on God’s enduring commitment: “I will take you as My people, and I will be your God” (Exodus 6:7). He broke Pharaoh’s power, led His people through the sea, and made them His treasured possession at Sinai (Exodus 15:13; 19:4–6). Their redemption demonstrated that they belonged to Him and that He would preserve His purposes through them. The plea recalls God’s past saving acts as grounds for present help.
