Definition and Context
Ambushment refers to the act of lying in wait to attack by surprise. In biblical terms, it often involves a strategic military tactic used by armies to gain an advantage over their enemies. The concept of ambushment is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament, where it is depicted as a legitimate and sometimes divinely sanctioned method of warfare.

Biblical Instances
One of the most notable instances of ambushment in the Bible is found in the Book of Joshua. After the initial defeat at Ai, God instructs Joshua to set an ambush behind the city. Joshua 8:2 states, "And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city." This divine strategy leads to a decisive victory for the Israelites, demonstrating that ambushment, when guided by God, can be a tool for fulfilling His purposes.

Another significant example is in the account of Gideon. In Judges 7, Gideon uses a form of ambushment against the Midianites. Although not a traditional ambush, the surprise attack at night with trumpets and torches creates confusion and leads to the Midianites' defeat. Judges 7:22 describes the outcome: "And when the three hundred trumpets sounded, the LORD set the sword of one against another throughout the camp, and the army fled."

Moral and Ethical Considerations
In the biblical narrative, ambushment is often portrayed as a morally neutral tactic, its righteousness or wickedness determined by the context and the intent behind its use. When employed by God's chosen leaders, such as Joshua or Gideon, ambushment is depicted as a means to achieve divine justice and fulfill God's promises to Israel. However, when used treacherously or deceitfully, it is condemned. For instance, in the account of Absalom's rebellion against King David, ambushment is part of a broader narrative of betrayal and usurpation (2 Samuel 15).

Spiritual Lessons
The use of ambushment in the Bible can also be seen as a metaphor for spiritual vigilance. Believers are often warned to be on guard against the ambushes of sin and temptation. In 1 Peter 5:8 , it is written, "Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." This verse underscores the need for constant spiritual awareness and readiness to resist the enemy's schemes.

Conclusion
While ambushment is primarily a military tactic in the biblical context, its implications extend to spiritual warfare and ethical considerations. The Bible presents it as a tool that can be used for both righteous and unrighteous purposes, depending on the intent and guidance behind its execution.
