The term "attacketh" is an archaic form of the verb "attack," which means to set upon with violent force, to assail, or to begin hostilities against. In the context of the Bible, the concept of attacking is often associated with warfare, spiritual battles, and the struggles between good and evil. The Bible provides numerous accounts of physical and spiritual attacks, illustrating the ongoing conflict between God's people and their adversaries.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the Israelites frequently faced attacks from surrounding nations. These conflicts were often seen as tests of faith and obedience to God. For instance, in 1 Samuel 17, the Philistines, led by Goliath, attack the Israelites. David's victory over Goliath is a testament to God's power and the faith of His people. The Berean Standard Bible recounts this event: "David said to the Philistine, 'You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.'" (1 Samuel 17:45).

The Israelites' battles were not only physical but also spiritual. In Deuteronomy 20, God provides instructions for warfare, emphasizing reliance on Him for victory: "For the LORD your God is the One who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you victory." (Deuteronomy 20:4).

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the concept of attack takes on a more spiritual dimension. Believers are called to be vigilant against the attacks of Satan and spiritual forces of evil. Ephesians 6:11-12 instructs Christians to "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

Jesus Himself faced spiritual attacks, most notably during His temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). He countered Satan's attacks with Scripture, demonstrating the power of God's Word in spiritual warfare.

Spiritual Warfare

The Bible teaches that believers are engaged in a constant spiritual battle. 1 Peter 5:8 warns, "Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." Christians are encouraged to remain steadfast in faith, using prayer, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit as their defense.

The Apostle Paul, in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 , emphasizes the spiritual nature of the believer's weapons: "The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We tear down arguments and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

Conclusion

The concept of "attacketh" in the Bible encompasses both physical and spiritual dimensions. Whether facing physical enemies or spiritual adversaries, the Bible consistently points to reliance on God, His Word, and His power for victory. Believers are called to be vigilant, equipped with the armor of God, and steadfast in faith as they navigate the challenges and attacks they encounter in their spiritual journey.
