Definition and Context:

The term "chambering" is derived from the Greek word "koitē," which is often translated as "bed" or "chamber" in the context of illicit sexual activity. In the Bible, "chambering" is used to describe immoral behavior, particularly sexual immorality and promiscuity. It is associated with actions that are contrary to the sanctity of marriage and the moral standards set forth in Scripture.

Biblical References:

The primary reference to "chambering" in the Bible is found in the New Testament, specifically in the book of Romans. The Apostle Paul addresses this behavior as part of a broader exhortation to live a life that is pleasing to God.

· Romans 13:13 : "Let us walk with decency, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy."

In this passage, "sexual immorality" is translated from the Greek "koitē," which is rendered as "chambering" in older translations such as the King James Version. Paul admonishes believers to live honorably, avoiding behaviors that are associated with darkness and sin.

Theological Significance:

From a theological perspective, "chambering" is understood as a violation of God's design for human sexuality. The Bible consistently upholds the sanctity of marriage as a covenant relationship between one man and one woman. Sexual relations are to be confined within the bounds of marriage, reflecting the purity and faithfulness that God desires for His people.

The call to avoid "chambering" is part of a larger biblical ethic that emphasizes holiness and self-control. Believers are encouraged to live in a manner that reflects their identity in Christ, rejecting the sinful practices of the world. This includes abstaining from sexual immorality, which is often linked to other forms of moral decay and spiritual compromise.

Practical Application:

In practical terms, the admonition against "chambering" serves as a reminder for Christians to guard their hearts and bodies against sexual sin. It calls for vigilance in maintaining purity and integrity in relationships. This involves setting boundaries, seeking accountability, and relying on the Holy Spirit for strength to resist temptation.

The church is called to uphold biblical standards of morality, providing guidance and support for individuals struggling with sexual sin. Teaching on the importance of chastity, the value of marriage, and the transformative power of the gospel is essential in helping believers live out their faith in a culture that often promotes contrary values.

Conclusion:

While the term "chambering" may not be commonly used in contemporary language, its implications remain relevant for Christians today. The biblical call to avoid sexual immorality and live in holiness is a timeless truth that continues to guide the conduct of believers in their pursuit of a life that honors God.

CHAMBERING

cham'-ber-ing: Illicit intercourse; the rendering in English Versions of the Bible since Tyndale of koitias (literally "beds," Romans 13:13). The Greek usage is paralleled in classic authors and the Septuagint; like the English participle, it denotes repeated or habitual acts. The word is not recorded elsewhere in English literature as verb or participle in this sense; in Othello, iii, 3, a chamberer is an intriguer, male wanton, in Byron, Werner, IV, 1, 404, a gallant or carpet knight, and in Chaucer, Clerk's Tale, 766, a concubine.
