Consultation of Prophets

The consultation of prophets is a significant theme throughout the Bible, reflecting the role of prophets as intermediaries between God and His people. Prophets were sought for divine guidance, instruction, and revelation, serving as God's mouthpieces to convey His will, warnings, and promises.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, prophets were often consulted by individuals and leaders seeking God's direction. One of the earliest examples is found in the account of Samuel, who was consulted by Saul when he was searching for his father's lost donkeys (1 Samuel 9:6-10). Saul's servant suggested seeking out the "man of God" because "all that he says surely comes to pass."

The kings of Israel and Judah frequently sought prophetic counsel. King David, for instance, consulted the prophet Nathan regarding his desire to build a temple for the Lord (2 Samuel 7:1-17). Nathan initially encouraged David, but later delivered God's message that David's son would build the temple instead.

In times of crisis, prophets were pivotal. During the reign of King Jehoshaphat, when Judah faced a formidable enemy alliance, the king sought the Lord's guidance through the prophet Jahaziel. The prophet assured them of God's deliverance, saying, "Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's" (2 Chronicles 20:15).

Role and Authority of Prophets

Prophets were recognized as authoritative figures whose words carried the weight of divine authority. Their messages often included calls to repentance, warnings of judgment, and promises of future hope. The authenticity of a prophet was tested by the fulfillment of their prophecies and their adherence to God's law (Deuteronomy 18:21-22).

The consultation of prophets was not limited to the Israelites. Foreign kings and nations also recognized the power and authority of Israel's prophets. For example, Naaman, a commander of the Syrian army, sought healing from the prophet Elisha (2 Kings 5:1-14).

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, the role of prophets continues, though with a shift in focus. John the Baptist is a prominent prophetic figure who prepares the way for Jesus Christ, calling people to repentance (Matthew 3:1-3). Jesus Himself is recognized as a prophet, though He is more than a prophet, being the Son of God and the fulfillment of the prophetic promises.

The early church also recognized the gift of prophecy as a spiritual gift (1 Corinthians 12:10). Prophets in the New Testament church provided guidance, encouragement, and edification to the believers. Agabus, for instance, predicted a severe famine and later warned Paul of his impending arrest (Acts 11:28; 21:10-11).

Warnings Against False Prophets

The Bible also warns against false prophets who claim to speak for God but lead people astray. In the Old Testament, false prophets were condemned for speaking lies and leading the people into idolatry (Jeremiah 23:16-17). Jesus warned His followers to "beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves" (Matthew 7:15).

Conclusion

The consultation of prophets underscores the importance of seeking God's guidance and the need for discernment in recognizing true prophetic voices. Throughout biblical history, prophets have played a crucial role in guiding God's people, delivering His messages, and pointing to the ultimate revelation of God in Jesus Christ.
