Death of Abijam

Topical Encyclopedia
The death of Abijam, also known as Abijah, is a significant event in the history of the divided monarchy of Israel and Judah. Abijam was the son of Rehoboam and the grandson of Solomon, and he reigned as the king of Judah. His reign is recorded in the biblical books of 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles.

Reign of Abijam

Abijam's reign is described in 1 Kings 15:1-8 and 2 Chronicles 13. He ascended to the throne of Judah in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam of Israel. His reign lasted for three years, and he ruled from Jerusalem, the city chosen by the LORD to put His Name there. The Berean Standard Bible states, "Abijam walked in all the sins his father had committed before him, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of his forefather David had been" (1 Kings 15:3).

Despite his shortcomings, Abijam's reign was marked by a significant military victory over Jeroboam, the king of Israel. According to 2 Chronicles 13, Abijam stood on Mount Zemaraim and declared the LORD's covenant with David, emphasizing the legitimacy of his rule over Judah. The LORD granted him victory because of his reliance on God during the battle, as the text notes, "God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah" (2 Chronicles 13:15).

Death and Succession

Abijam's death is briefly mentioned in the biblical narrative. 1 Kings 15:8 states, "And Abijam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David, and his son Asa reigned in his place." This passage indicates that Abijam was laid to rest in the traditional burial place of the kings of Judah, the City of David, which is part of Jerusalem.

Following Abijam's death, his son Asa succeeded him as king. Asa's reign is noted for religious reforms and a return to the worship of the LORD, contrasting with the practices of his father. Asa's commitment to the LORD is highlighted in the biblical text, marking a period of spiritual renewal for Judah.

Theological Significance

The account of Abijam's reign and death serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to God. Despite Abijam's failure to fully devote his heart to the LORD, God's covenant with David ensured the continuation of his lineage. This narrative underscores the enduring nature of God's promises and the consequences of a divided heart.

The account of Abijam also highlights the theme of divine intervention in the affairs of nations. His victory over Jeroboam, despite his personal failings, illustrates God's sovereignty and willingness to act on behalf of His people when they call upon Him. This event serves as a testament to the power of reliance on God, even amidst personal and national shortcomings.
