Edom:

Edom, a nation descended from Esau, the brother of Jacob, holds a significant place in biblical history. The Edomites settled in the region south of the Dead Sea, an area characterized by rugged terrain and known for its red sandstone, which is reflected in the name "Edom," meaning "red." The relationship between Israel and Edom was complex, marked by both kinship and conflict.

The Bible records several instances of hostility between Edom and Israel. In Numbers 20:14-21, Edom denied Israel passage through their land during the Exodus, forcing the Israelites to take a longer route. This act of hostility set the stage for future conflicts. Despite their shared ancestry, Edom often opposed Israel, aligning with their enemies and participating in attacks against them.

One of the most notable rebellions of Edom occurred during the reign of King Jehoram of Judah. As recorded in 2 Kings 8:20-22 , "In the days of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against the hand of Judah and appointed their own king. So Jehoram crossed over to Zair with all his chariots. And the Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and attacked the Edomites by night and his army fled home. So to this day Edom has been in rebellion against the hand of Judah."

This rebellion marked a significant shift in the power dynamics of the region, as Edom successfully gained independence from Judah's control. The rebellion of Edom is often seen as a fulfillment of the prophecy given to Rebekah in Genesis 25:23, where it was foretold that "the older will serve the younger," indicating the eventual subjugation and rebellion of Esau's descendants against Jacob's.

Libnah:

Libnah was a city in the Shephelah region of Judah, known for its strategic importance and its role in the biblical narrative. The city is first mentioned in the context of the Israelite conquest of Canaan, where it was captured by Joshua as recorded in Joshua 10:29-30. Libnah was allotted to the tribe of Judah and later became a Levitical city, as noted in Joshua 21:13.

The rebellion of Libnah is mentioned in the context of the reign of King Jehoram of Judah, alongside the rebellion of Edom. In 2 Kings 8:22 , it is stated, "So to this day Edom has been in rebellion against the hand of Judah. Libnah also rebelled at the same time." This simultaneous rebellion indicates a period of instability and weakened control within the kingdom of Judah.

The reasons for Libnah's rebellion are not explicitly detailed in the biblical text, but it is often understood as a response to Jehoram's apostasy and the resulting divine disfavor. Jehoram's reign was marked by idolatry and the abandonment of the covenantal practices of his forefathers, which may have led to internal dissent and the desire for autonomy among the cities under his rule.

The rebellion of Libnah, like that of Edom, serves as a reminder of the consequences of unfaithfulness to God's covenant and the resulting political and social upheaval. Throughout the biblical narrative, such events underscore the importance of adherence to divine commandments and the impact of leadership on the spiritual and political health of a nation.
