Embrace Christ's Priesthood

The concept of embracing Christ's priesthood is deeply rooted in the New Testament, where Jesus is depicted as the ultimate High Priest. This role is central to understanding His work of redemption and intercession for believers. The priesthood of Christ is a fulfillment of Old Testament typology and a cornerstone of Christian theology.

Christ as High Priest

The Epistle to the Hebrews provides the most comprehensive exposition of Christ's priesthood. Hebrews 4:14-16 states, "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

This passage highlights several key aspects of Christ's priesthood: His divine nature, His empathetic understanding of human frailty, and His sinlessness. As the High Priest, Jesus mediates between God and humanity, offering believers direct access to God's grace.

The Order of Melchizedek

Christ's priesthood is distinct from the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament. Hebrews 7:17 declares, "For it is testified: 'You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.'" This reference to Melchizedek, a mysterious figure who appears in Genesis 14, signifies a priesthood that is eternal and not based on hereditary lineage. Unlike the Levitical priests, whose service was temporary and limited, Christ's priesthood is everlasting and perfect.

Sacrifice and Atonement

Central to Christ's priesthood is His sacrificial death on the cross. Hebrews 9:11-12 explains, "But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands, that is, not of this creation. He did not enter by the blood of goats and calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus securing eternal redemption."

Christ's sacrifice is superior to the animal sacrifices of the Old Covenant, which were merely symbolic and temporary. His offering was once and for all, providing complete atonement for sin and reconciling believers to God.

Intercession and Advocacy

In His role as High Priest, Christ continues to intercede for believers. Romans 8:34 affirms, "Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died, and more than that was raised to life, is at the right hand of God—and He is interceding for us." This ongoing intercession assures believers of Christ's continual presence and advocacy before the Father.

Believers as a Royal Priesthood

The priesthood of Christ also has implications for believers, who are called to participate in a royal priesthood. 1 Peter 2:9 states, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." Through Christ, believers are granted the privilege and responsibility to serve as priests, offering spiritual sacrifices and proclaiming the Gospel.

Conclusion

Embracing Christ's priesthood involves recognizing His unique role as the mediator of the New Covenant, the perfect sacrifice for sin, and the eternal intercessor for His people. It calls believers to live in the light of His priestly work, participating in the royal priesthood and drawing near to God with confidence and reverence.
