Foundation of Redemption

The concept of the "Foundation of Redemption" is a central theme in Christian theology, encapsulating God's plan for the salvation of humanity through Jesus Christ. This foundational doctrine is woven throughout the narrative of the Bible, from the Old Testament prophecies to the New Testament fulfillment in Christ's life, death, and resurrection.

Old Testament Foreshadowing

The foundation of redemption is laid in the earliest chapters of Genesis. After the fall of man, God promises a future redeemer. Genesis 3:15 states, "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." This protoevangelium, or "first gospel," hints at the coming of Christ, who would ultimately defeat sin and Satan.

Throughout the Old Testament, the sacrificial system established in the Law of Moses serves as a type and shadow of the ultimate sacrifice to come. The Passover lamb, as described in Exodus 12, prefigures Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). The prophets also speak of a coming Messiah who would bring redemption. Isaiah 53 vividly describes the suffering servant who would bear the iniquities of many, pointing to Jesus' sacrificial death.

New Testament Fulfillment

The New Testament reveals the fulfillment of these Old Testament prophecies and types in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The Gospels present Jesus as the promised Messiah, whose mission was to redeem humanity. In Mark 10:45 , Jesus declares, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."

The Apostle Paul expounds on the foundation of redemption in his epistles. In Ephesians 1:7 , he writes, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace." This redemption is not merely a release from sin's penalty but also includes the restoration of a right relationship with God.

The Role of Faith

Faith is the means by which individuals partake in the redemption offered through Christ. Romans 3:22-24 states, "And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus." Faith in Christ's atoning work is essential for salvation, underscoring the personal appropriation of redemption.

The Eternal Plan

The foundation of redemption is rooted in God's eternal plan. Ephesians 1:4-5 reveals that God "chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence. In love He predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will." This passage highlights the divine initiative and purpose behind redemption, emphasizing that it is part of God's sovereign plan.

The Church and Redemption

The Church, as the body of Christ, plays a vital role in the ongoing work of redemption. Believers are called to be ambassadors of Christ, sharing the message of reconciliation with the world. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 states, "All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation."

Eschatological Hope

The foundation of redemption also includes an eschatological dimension, pointing to the ultimate consummation of God's redemptive plan. Revelation 21:3-4 offers a vision of the new creation, where God will dwell with His people, and "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away." This future hope is the culmination of the redemption that began with Christ's first coming and will be completed at His return.
