In the context of biblical studies, "intersecting" refers to the points at which biblical narratives, themes, or teachings converge or overlap, providing a deeper understanding of God's revelation and His plan for humanity. This concept can be seen throughout Scripture as various elements of God's Word come together to reveal His truth and purpose.

Intersecting Themes

One of the most prominent examples of intersecting themes in the Bible is the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament lays the foundation for the coming of the Messiah, while the New Testament reveals the fulfillment of these prophecies in Jesus Christ. For instance, the sacrificial system established in the Old Testament intersects with the New Testament's portrayal of Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice for sin. Hebrews 10:10 states, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Intersecting Covenants

The concept of covenants is another area where intersecting occurs. The Abrahamic, Mosaic, and New Covenants each play a significant role in the biblical narrative. The Abrahamic Covenant, with its promise of blessing to all nations, intersects with the New Covenant through Jesus Christ, who fulfills this promise. Galatians 3:14 explains, "He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit."

Intersecting Prophecies

Prophecies in the Bible often intersect with historical events and the life of Jesus. The prophecy of the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 is a clear example, as it intersects with the New Testament accounts of Jesus' crucifixion. Isaiah 53:5 states, "But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." This prophecy finds its fulfillment in the New Testament, as seen in 1 Peter 2:24 : "He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. 'By His stripes you are healed.'"

Intersecting Lives

The lives of biblical characters often intersect in ways that reveal God's sovereignty and purpose. For example, the account of Joseph in Genesis intersects with the narrative of the Israelites' eventual exodus from Egypt. Joseph's rise to power in Egypt sets the stage for the Israelites' settlement there, which later leads to their enslavement and subsequent deliverance. Genesis 50:20 captures this intersection: "As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

Intersecting Teachings

The teachings of Jesus often intersect with the moral and ethical instructions found in the Old Testament. The Sermon on the Mount, for example, intersects with the Ten Commandments by expanding on their meaning and application. Jesus emphasizes the spirit of the law rather than mere adherence to its letter. Matthew 5:17 records Jesus saying, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them."

In summary, the concept of intersecting in the Bible highlights the interconnectedness of God's Word, revealing a cohesive and unified message that spans both Testaments and encompasses various themes, covenants, prophecies, lives, and teachings.
