Etymology and Meaning: The name "Iyeabarim" is derived from Hebrew, where "Iye" means "ruins" or "heaps," and "Abarim" refers to a region or mountain range. Thus, Iyeabarim can be understood as "Ruins of Abarim" or "Heaps of the Abarim."

Biblical References: Iyeabarim is mentioned in the context of the Israelites' wilderness journey during the Exodus. It is specifically noted in the Book of Numbers as one of the encampments of the Israelites.

· Numbers 21:11 : "Then they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab toward the sunrise."

· Numbers 33:44 : "They set out from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, on the border of Moab."

Geographical Context: Iyeabarim is located in the wilderness region east of the Jordan River, near the border of Moab. The Abarim range is a series of mountains or highlands that run parallel to the eastern side of the Dead Sea. This area is significant in the biblical narrative as it represents the final stages of the Israelites' journey before entering the Promised Land.

Historical and Theological Significance: The encampment at Iyeabarim marks a transitional phase for the Israelites as they approach the land promised to them by God. It is a place that signifies both the challenges of the wilderness and the hope of the impending fulfillment of God's promises. The journey through the wilderness, including the stop at Iyeabarim, is a testament to God's guidance and provision for His people despite their frequent disobedience and lack of faith.

Cultural and Archaeological Insights: While specific archaeological evidence for Iyeabarim is limited, the broader region of Abarim has been subject to various studies. The Abarim mountains are often associated with significant biblical events, including Moses' view of the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, which is part of the Abarim range. The cultural context of the area during the time of the Exodus would have been influenced by the neighboring Moabites, with whom the Israelites had complex interactions.

Related Biblical Themes: Iyeabarim is part of the larger narrative of the Exodus, which includes themes of faith, obedience, and the fulfillment of divine promises. The journey through the wilderness, with its various encampments, serves as a metaphor for the spiritual journey of believers, emphasizing reliance on God's guidance and the hope of reaching the ultimate "Promised Land" of eternal life with God.

Cross-References: For further study, see related entries on the Exodus, the Abarim mountains, Moab, and the wilderness wanderings of the Israelites. Additionally, consider the broader narrative of the Pentateuch, particularly the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, which provide context for the journey and experiences of the Israelites.
