Biblical References:
Jarah is mentioned in the genealogical records of the tribe of Benjamin in the Old Testament. The primary reference to Jarah is found in 1 Chronicles 9:42.

Scriptural Context:
1 Chronicles 9:42 states: "Ahaz was the father of Jarah, and Jarah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri was the father of Moza." This passage is part of a larger genealogical listing that traces the lineage of the tribe of Benjamin, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The genealogies in 1 Chronicles serve to establish the historical and familial connections of the Israelites, particularly after their return from the Babylonian exile.

Genealogical Significance:
Jarah is noted as a descendant of Ahaz, and he is part of a lineage that includes several other individuals. The genealogies in Chronicles are significant for several reasons. They provide a sense of continuity and identity for the post-exilic community, affirming their connection to the patriarchs and the promises given to Israel. Jarah's inclusion in this genealogy underscores the importance of family lines and heritage in the biblical narrative.

Cultural and Historical Insights:
The genealogies in 1 Chronicles, including the mention of Jarah, reflect the ancient Near Eastern practice of recording family histories to establish legal rights, inheritance, and tribal affiliations. For the Israelites, these records were also theological, emphasizing God's faithfulness to His covenant people through successive generations.

Theological Implications:
From a theological perspective, the mention of Jarah, though brief, contributes to the overarching biblical theme of God's providence and the unfolding of His redemptive plan through history. Each name in the genealogies, including Jarah's, represents a link in the chain of God's dealings with His people, leading ultimately to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who is traced through the line of David, a descendant of the tribe of Judah.

Conclusion:
While Jarah is a relatively obscure figure in the biblical text, his mention in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles highlights the importance of every individual in the tapestry of God's redemptive history. The genealogical records serve as a reminder of the continuity of God's promises and the faithfulness of His covenant with Israel.

JARAH

ja'-ra (ya`rah, "honey-comb" (?)): A descendant of King Saul (1 Chronicles 9:42); but the Septuagint's Codices Vaticanus and Alexandrinus, have Iada = ya`dah, a name found in Septuagint of 1 Chronicles 8:36, where Massoretic Text has yeho`addah, Jehoaddah. Some Hebrew manuscripts have ya`dah in 9:42, and it should probably be accepted as the correct reading there, for ya`dah = Jehoaddah yeho`addah, linguistically; compare Jonathan and Jehonathan, etc.
