Topical Encyclopedia
Abihu, a significant figure in the Old Testament, was one of the sons of Aaron, the brother of Moses. As part of the Levitical priesthood, Abihu was called to serve in the sacred duties of the Tabernacle, a role that underscored the holiness and responsibility required of those who ministered before God.

Family and Lineage

Abihu was the second son of Aaron and Elisheba, making him a member of the tribe of Levi. His brothers were Nadab, Eleazar, and Ithamar. The family of Aaron was chosen by God to serve as priests, a position of great honor and responsibility. Exodus 6:23 provides a genealogical reference: "Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon, and she bore him Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar."

Priestly Role and Duties

Abihu, along with his brothers, was consecrated to the priesthood in a ceremony described in Leviticus 8. This consecration involved a series of rituals, including sacrifices and anointing, signifying their set-apart status for service in the Tabernacle. Leviticus 8:30 states, "So Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments, as well as on his sons and their garments. In this way, he consecrated Aaron and his garments, and also his sons and their garments."

As a priest, Abihu was responsible for performing various duties, including offering sacrifices, maintaining the sacred fire, and ensuring the proper conduct of worship according to the laws given by God through Moses.

The Incident of Strange Fire

Abihu is perhaps most famously known for the incident involving "strange fire," which led to his untimely death. In Leviticus 10:1-2, the Berean Standard Bible recounts this event: "Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them, and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to His command. So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD."

This incident highlights the seriousness of adhering to God's commands, especially for those in positions of spiritual leadership. The "unauthorized fire" or "strange fire" was an offering not commanded by God, demonstrating a breach of the sacred duties entrusted to the priests.

Theological Implications

The account of Abihu serves as a sobering reminder of the holiness required in approaching God. It underscores the importance of obedience and reverence in worship, particularly for those who serve in spiritual capacities. The narrative also reflects the broader theme of God's holiness and the need for His people to approach Him with the utmost respect and adherence to His instructions.

Legacy

Despite the tragic end, Abihu's account is integral to understanding the priesthood's role and the gravity of serving before a holy God. His life and death are a testament to the sacredness of the priestly office and the divine expectations placed upon those who are called to serve.
