This figure is often interpreted as an angel or a theophany—a manifestation of God. The struggle results in Jacob receiving a new name, Israel, meaning "he struggles with God." This encounter is pivotal, symbolizing Jacob's transformation and the divine blessing upon him.

"So Jacob was left all alone, and there a man wrestled with him until daybreak." (Genesis 32:24)

3. The Angelic Host at Mahanaim (Genesis 32:1-2): Before his encounter with Esau, Jacob is met by the angels of God at a place he names Mahanaim, meaning "two camps." This vision reassures Jacob of God's presence and protection as he faces potential danger from Esau. The appearance of the angelic host serves as a divine confirmation of God's ongoing guidance and support.

"Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. When Jacob saw them, he said, 'This is the camp of God.' So he named that place Mahanaim." (Genesis 32:1-2)
