Topical Encyclopedia
Eliezer, a notable figure in the Old Testament, is recognized as a priest and a descendant of Aaron, the brother of Moses. His lineage and role are significant in the context of the Levitical priesthood, which was established by God to serve in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

Lineage and Family

Eliezer was the third son of Aaron and Elisheba, making him a member of the priestly family chosen by God to minister before Him. His brothers were Nadab, Abihu, and Ithamar. After the tragic deaths of Nadab and Abihu, who were consumed by fire from the Lord for offering unauthorized fire (Leviticus 10:1-2), Eliezer and Ithamar were left to carry on the priestly duties alongside their father, Aaron.

Role and Responsibilities

As a priest, Eliezer was entrusted with various sacred duties. He was involved in the daily offerings, the maintenance of the tabernacle, and the instruction of the Israelites in the laws and commandments of God. The priesthood was a hereditary office, and Eliezer's descendants continued to serve in this capacity.

In Numbers 3:32, Eliezer is mentioned as the chief of the leaders of the Levites, overseeing those who were responsible for the care of the sanctuary. This position highlights his importance and the trust placed in him to ensure the proper functioning of the tabernacle services.

Biblical References

Eliezer's role is further emphasized in Numbers 4:16, where it states, "The duty of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest is the care of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering, and the anointing oil. He is to oversee the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and articles." This passage underscores his responsibility for the sacred elements used in worship and his oversight of the tabernacle's operations.

Legacy

Eliezer's legacy is carried on through his descendants, who continued to serve as priests. His son, Phinehas, is particularly noted for his zealousness for God's honor, which is recorded in Numbers 25:11-13. Phinehas's actions during a time of national sin brought about a covenant of peace and a promise of a lasting priesthood for his lineage.

Eliezer's faithfulness and dedication to his priestly duties exemplify the high calling and responsibility of those who serve in the presence of the Lord. His life and service are a testament to the enduring nature of the priestly office established by God for the spiritual leadership and guidance of His people.
