Prioritize Devotion to God

The concept of prioritizing devotion to God is a central theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the importance of placing God at the forefront of one's life. This principle is rooted in the understanding that God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, deserving of our utmost love, reverence, and commitment.

Biblical Foundation

The call to prioritize devotion to God is first established in the Old Testament. In the Shema, a foundational Jewish prayer found in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, the Israelites are commanded: "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." . This passage underscores the necessity of wholehearted devotion to God, encompassing every aspect of one's being.

The Ten Commandments further reinforce this priority, beginning with the commandment: "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3). This directive establishes the exclusivity of worship and allegiance to God, rejecting idolatry and any form of divided loyalty.

New Testament Teachings

In the New Testament, Jesus reiterates the importance of prioritizing devotion to God. When asked about the greatest commandment, He responds: "‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment" (Matthew 22:37-38). Jesus affirms that love for God is the foundation upon which all other commandments rest.

The Apostle Paul also emphasizes this priority in his epistles. In Colossians 3:1-2, he instructs believers: "Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ, strive for the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things" . Paul encourages Christians to focus their thoughts and desires on heavenly matters, reflecting a life devoted to God.

Practical Application

Prioritizing devotion to God involves both internal attitudes and external actions. Internally, it requires cultivating a heart that seeks God above all else, as expressed in Psalm 42:1: "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God" . This longing for God should manifest in daily practices such as prayer, meditation on Scripture, and worship.

Externally, devotion to God is demonstrated through obedience to His commandments and service to others. Jesus teaches that love for God is inseparable from love for neighbor, as seen in Matthew 22:39: "And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’" . Acts of kindness, justice, and mercy are tangible expressions of a life devoted to God.

Challenges and Encouragement

While the call to prioritize devotion to God is clear, believers often face challenges in maintaining this focus amidst the distractions and demands of daily life. Jesus warns of the dangers of divided loyalties in Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money" . This passage highlights the need for intentionality in choosing God over worldly pursuits.

Believers are encouraged to persevere in their devotion, trusting in God's faithfulness. Hebrews 12:1-2 exhorts Christians to "run with endurance the race set out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith" . By keeping their focus on Christ, believers can navigate the challenges of life while maintaining their devotion to God.
