Protection of God's Work

The concept of the protection of God's work is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing God's sovereignty and His commitment to preserving His divine purposes and plans. This protection is evident in various narratives, teachings, and promises found in both the Old and New Testaments.

Old Testament Foundations

In the Old Testament, God's protection over His work is often demonstrated through His covenant with Israel. The nation of Israel was chosen to be a vessel for God's purposes, and His protection over them is a testament to His faithfulness. In Exodus 14:13-14 , Moses reassures the Israelites as they face the Egyptian army: "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."

The Psalms frequently highlight God's protective nature. Psalm 121:7-8 declares, "The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore." This assurance of protection is not only for individuals but also for the collective work of God through His people.

Prophetic Assurance

The prophets also speak of God's protection over His work. In Isaiah 54:17 , the prophet assures Israel of divine protection: "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from Me, declares the LORD." This promise underscores the idea that God's work, carried out through His people, will ultimately prevail despite opposition.

New Testament Continuation

In the New Testament, the protection of God's work is seen in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and the early Church. Jesus, in His prayer for His disciples, asks for divine protection in John 17:15 : "I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one." This prayer highlights the ongoing need for divine protection as the disciples carry out God's work in the world.

The Acts of the Apostles provides numerous examples of God's protective hand over the early Church. In Acts 5:38-39 , Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee, advises the Sanhedrin regarding the apostles: "So in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or endeavor is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God." This passage illustrates the belief that God's work is unstoppable and divinely protected.

Pauline Epistles

The Apostle Paul frequently writes about the protection of God's work in his epistles. In Philippians 1:6 , Paul expresses confidence in God's ongoing work: "being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." This assurance is rooted in the belief that God's work, once initiated, will be brought to completion under His divine protection.

Eschatological Perspective

The protection of God's work also has an eschatological dimension. The Book of Revelation speaks of God's ultimate victory and the preservation of His purposes. Revelation 3:10 promises protection to the faithful: "Because you have kept My command to persevere, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth."

Throughout Scripture, the protection of God's work is a testament to His omnipotence and faithfulness. Whether through the preservation of Israel, the safeguarding of the early Church, or the ultimate fulfillment of His eschatological promises, God's protective hand is evident, ensuring that His divine purposes are accomplished.
