Shemaah is a biblical figure mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically within the context of King David's reign. The name Shemaah is derived from the Hebrew root "shama," meaning "to hear" or "to listen," which is a common theme in biblical names, often reflecting a characteristic or a divine interaction.

Biblical References:

1. 1 Chronicles 12:3 : Shemaah is identified as the father of Ahiezer, who was one of the mighty warriors that joined David at Ziklag. The passage states: "Ahiezer was the chief, and Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah, Jehu the Anathothite." This reference places Shemaah within the tribe of Benjamin, as Gibeah was a Benjamite city. His sons, Ahiezer and Joash, are noted for their allegiance to David during a critical period when David was consolidating his power and gathering support from various tribes of Israel.

Historical and Cultural Context:

Shemaah's mention in the context of David's supporters highlights the political and military alliances that were crucial during the early years of David's rule. The tribe of Benjamin, to which Shemaah belonged, was historically significant, as it was the tribe of Saul, the first king of Israel. The support of Benjamites like Shemaah's sons for David indicates a shift in loyalty from Saul's house to David, which was a pivotal development in the establishment of David's kingdom.

Theological Significance:

From a theological perspective, the inclusion of Shemaah and his sons in the biblical narrative underscores the theme of divine providence and the fulfillment of God's promises to David. The gathering of mighty men from various tribes, including those from Saul's own tribe, reflects the unifying work of God in bringing together the nation of Israel under David's leadership. This unity was essential for the establishment of a kingdom that would ultimately lead to the fulfillment of the messianic promise through David's lineage.

Character and Legacy:

While Shemaah himself is not a central figure in the biblical narrative, his legacy is carried on through his sons, who played a role in supporting David. This support is indicative of the broader movement within Israel towards recognizing David as the anointed king. The loyalty of Shemaah's family to David serves as a testament to the shifting dynamics within the tribes of Israel and the divine orchestration of events leading to the establishment of the Davidic dynasty.

In summary, Shemaah, though briefly mentioned, is part of the intricate tapestry of relationships and loyalties that shaped the early monarchy in Israel. His family's allegiance to David highlights the broader narrative of God's unfolding plan for His people through the establishment of a united kingdom under David.

SHEMAAH

she-ma'-a, shem'-a-a (ha-shema`-ah; Codex Vaticanus Ama, Codex Alexandrinus Samaa, Lucian, Asma): A Benjamite, who was the father, according to the Massoretic Text, of Ahiezer and Joash; but according to the Septuagint huios = (ben) instead of (bene) of Joash alone (1 Chronicles 12:3). The original text may have read ben yeho-shama` (compare hoshama`, of 1 Chronicles 3:18); then a dittography of the following (h) caused the error (Curtis, ICC).
