In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus outlines a process for addressing sin among believers: "If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector."

The Apostle Paul also addresses sin in the church in his epistles. In 1 Corinthians 5:1-2, Paul confronts the Corinthian church for tolerating sexual immorality: "It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is intolerable even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been stricken with grief and removed from your fellowship the man who did this?" Paul emphasizes the need for church discipline to maintain the purity of the congregation.

Church Discipline

Church discipline is a biblical mandate designed to address sin within the church. It serves several purposes: restoring the sinner, protecting the church's purity, and upholding the church's testimony to the world. In 1 Corinthians 5:6-7, Paul warns, "Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed."

The process of church discipline, as outlined in Scripture, involves private confrontation, followed by increasing levels of accountability if repentance is not forthcoming. The ultimate goal is always restoration and reconciliation, as seen in Galatians 6:1: "Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him with a spirit of gentleness. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted."

The Role of Leaders

Church leaders bear a significant responsibility in addressing sin within the congregation. They are called to shepherd the flock and guard against false teachings and immoral behavior. In Titus 1:9, Paul instructs that an elder "must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it."

Leaders are also called to model godly behavior and integrity. In 1 Timothy 3:2-3, Paul outlines the qualifications for overseers, stating, "An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money."

The Call to Holiness

The church is called to be holy, reflecting the character of God. In 1 Peter 1:15-16, believers are exhorted, "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" This call to holiness is a collective responsibility, urging each member to pursue righteousness and support one another in living out the Christian faith.

Sin in the church is a reality that must be addressed with biblical wisdom and love. Through church discipline, the guidance of leaders, and a commitment to holiness, the church can effectively deal with sin and continue to be a light in a dark world.
