The Consequence of Ignoring

In the biblical narrative, the theme of ignoring divine instruction, wisdom, or warnings is recurrent and carries significant consequences. The Scriptures provide numerous examples and teachings that illustrate the peril of turning a deaf ear to God's voice and the wisdom He imparts through His Word and His prophets.

Old Testament Examples

1. Adam and Eve (Genesis 3): The first instance of ignoring God's command is found in the Garden of Eden. God explicitly instructed Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. However, they ignored this command, leading to the fall of man and the introduction of sin and death into the world. This act of disobedience resulted in their expulsion from the Garden and a life of hardship.

2. The Israelites in the Wilderness (Numbers 14): After the exodus from Egypt, the Israelites repeatedly ignored God's instructions and grumbled against Him. When they refused to enter the Promised Land out of fear, despite God's assurance of victory, they faced the consequence of wandering in the wilderness for forty years until that generation perished.

3. Saul's Disobedience (1 Samuel 15): King Saul ignored God's command to completely destroy the Amalekites and all they possessed. Instead, he spared King Agag and the best of the livestock. As a result, God rejected Saul as king, demonstrating that partial obedience is still disobedience in God's eyes.

Wisdom Literature

The Book of Proverbs frequently warns against ignoring wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:24-31 states, "Because you refused my call, and no one took my outstretched hand, because you neglected all my counsel and wanted none of my correction, in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer when terror strikes you... Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will earnestly seek me, but will not find me." This passage highlights the dire consequences of ignoring wisdom, leading to calamity and distress.

Prophetic Warnings

The prophets often spoke of the consequences of ignoring God's messages. In Jeremiah 7:13 , God declares, "And now, because you have done all these things, declares the LORD, and because I spoke to you again and again but you did not listen, and I called to you but you did not answer..." The people of Judah faced destruction and exile because they ignored the prophetic warnings to repent and turn back to God.

New Testament Teachings

1. The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31): Jesus tells of a rich man who ignored the plight of the poor man Lazarus. After death, the rich man found himself in torment, while Lazarus was comforted. This parable underscores the eternal consequences of ignoring the needs of others and failing to live righteously.

2. The Warning to the Churches (Revelation 2-3): In the letters to the seven churches, Jesus warns them to heed His words and repent. Ignoring these warnings would result in severe consequences, such as the removal of their lampstand or being spewed out of His mouth.

Apostolic Exhortations

The apostles also emphasized the importance of not ignoring God's voice. Hebrews 2:1-3 warns, "We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every transgression and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" This passage stresses the importance of heeding the message of salvation through Christ, as neglecting it leads to spiritual peril.

Throughout Scripture, the consequence of ignoring God's commands, wisdom, and warnings is clear: it leads to spiritual, physical, and eternal repercussions. The Bible consistently calls believers to listen, obey, and remain attentive to God's voice to avoid these dire outcomes.
