The Inner Sanctuary as a Symbol of God's Presence

The Inner Sanctuary, often referred to as the Holy of Holies, holds profound significance in biblical theology as the ultimate symbol of God's presence among His people. This sacred space, located within the Tabernacle and later the Temple, was the most hallowed area where the divine presence of God was believed to dwell.

Biblical Description and Significance

The concept of the Inner Sanctuary is first introduced in the construction of the Tabernacle during the Israelites' wilderness journey. In Exodus 26:33-34 , God instructs Moses, "Hang the veil from the clasps, and place the ark of the Testimony behind the veil. The veil will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. Put the mercy seat on the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy Place." This veil served as a physical barrier, signifying the separation between a holy God and sinful humanity.

The Holy of Holies housed the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the stone tablets of the Law, Aaron's rod, and a jar of manna (Hebrews 9:4). The Ark was topped with the mercy seat, where God's presence was said to dwell between the cherubim. This sacred space was so holy that only the high priest could enter, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16:2-34).

Symbolism of God's Presence

The Inner Sanctuary symbolizes God's desire to dwell among His people, yet it also underscores the holiness and separateness of God. The restricted access to the Holy of Holies highlights the gravity of sin and the need for atonement. The presence of God in this sacred space was a constant reminder of His covenant with Israel and His faithfulness to His promises.

In 1 Kings 8:10-11 , during the dedication of Solomon's Temple, the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD, so much so that the priests could not stand to minister. This manifestation of divine glory affirmed God's presence and approval of the Temple as His dwelling place on earth.

Fulfillment in Christ

The New Testament reveals the ultimate fulfillment of the symbolism of the Inner Sanctuary in the person and work of Jesus Christ. At the moment of Christ's crucifixion, the veil of the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51), signifying the removal of the barrier between God and humanity. Hebrews 9:11-12 explains, "But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He entered the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not of this creation. He did not enter by the blood of goats and calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus securing eternal redemption."

Through Christ's sacrificial death, believers now have direct access to God's presence, a privilege once reserved for the high priest alone. This access is further emphasized in Hebrews 10:19-22 , which encourages believers to "enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body."

The Inner Sanctuary in Christian Life

For Christians, the Inner Sanctuary serves as a powerful symbol of the intimate relationship they can now enjoy with God through Jesus Christ. It reminds believers of the holiness of God, the seriousness of sin, and the incredible grace extended through the atoning work of Christ. As the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:16 , "Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?" This indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit signifies that believers themselves have become the temple of God, a living sanctuary where His presence resides.
