The Purpose of Our Service

The concept of service is deeply embedded in the Christian faith, reflecting the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The purpose of our service is multifaceted, encompassing obedience to God, love for others, and the advancement of God's kingdom on earth.

Obedience to God

Service is fundamentally an act of obedience to God. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were called to serve God with all their heart and soul (Deuteronomy 10:12). This call to service is reiterated in the New Testament, where believers are urged to present themselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1). Service, therefore, is an expression of our commitment to follow God's commandments and live according to His will.

Love for Others

The purpose of our service is also rooted in love for others. Jesus emphasized the importance of loving one's neighbor as oneself, which is the second greatest commandment (Matthew 22:39). This love is demonstrated through acts of service, as seen in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37). The apostle Paul further encourages believers to serve one another humbly in love (Galatians 5:13). Service, in this context, is a tangible expression of the love that believers are called to exhibit.

Advancement of God's Kingdom

Service plays a crucial role in the advancement of God's kingdom. Jesus taught His disciples to pray for God's kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). By serving others, believers participate in the realization of God's kingdom, spreading the message of the Gospel and demonstrating the transformative power of God's love. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) underscores the importance of service in making disciples of all nations, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey everything Jesus commanded.

Imitation of Christ

Believers are called to imitate Christ, who exemplified the ultimate model of service. Jesus, though being in very nature God, took on the form of a servant and humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death on a cross (Philippians 2:7-8). His life was marked by acts of service, from washing the disciples' feet (John 13:14-15) to healing the sick and feeding the hungry. By following His example, believers fulfill their purpose in service, reflecting Christ's humility and love.

Spiritual Growth and Edification

Service also contributes to the spiritual growth and edification of the believer. Engaging in acts of service fosters spiritual maturity, as it requires reliance on God's strength and guidance. The apostle Peter exhorts believers to use their gifts to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms (1 Peter 4:10). Through service, believers grow in their faith, develop their spiritual gifts, and build up the body of Christ.

Eternal Reward

Finally, the purpose of our service is linked to the promise of eternal reward. Jesus taught that those who serve others in His name will be rewarded in heaven (Matthew 25:34-40). The apostle Paul also speaks of the imperishable crown that awaits those who faithfully serve the Lord (1 Corinthians 9:25). While the primary motivation for service is love and obedience, the promise of eternal reward serves as an encouragement for believers to persevere in their service to God and others.
