Theras is a biblical figure mentioned in the genealogies of the descendants of Noah, specifically within the Table of Nations found in the Book of Genesis. Theras is identified as a son of Javan, who was a son of Japheth, one of Noah's three sons. The genealogical record places Theras among the early post-flood generations, contributing to the spread of nations and peoples across the earth.

Biblical Reference:

Theras is mentioned in Genesis 10:4, which states: "The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittites, and the Rodanites." While the Berean Standard Bible does not explicitly name Theras, he is traditionally associated with the Rodanites, as some translations and interpretations suggest a connection to the people of Thera or the Therans.

Historical and Geographical Context:

The descendants of Javan, including Theras, are traditionally linked to the regions surrounding the Aegean Sea. Javan is often associated with the Ionian Greeks, and his sons are believed to have settled in various parts of the Mediterranean. Theras, in particular, is thought to have connections to the island of Thera (modern-day Santorini) or the surrounding areas, which were significant in ancient maritime trade and cultural exchange.

Cultural Significance:

The mention of Theras and his brothers in the Table of Nations highlights the biblical narrative of the dispersion of peoples and the establishment of distinct ethnic and cultural groups following the flood. This dispersion is seen as part of God's providential plan to populate the earth and fulfill His command to "be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 9:1).

Theological Implications:

From a theological perspective, the inclusion of Theras in the genealogies underscores the unity and diversity of humanity as descendants of Noah. It reflects the biblical theme of God's sovereignty over the nations and His unfolding plan for redemption that encompasses all peoples. The genealogies serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness of humanity and the shared heritage that traces back to the early chapters of Genesis.

Legacy:

While Theras himself is not a prominent figure in biblical narratives, his mention in the genealogies contributes to the broader understanding of the ancient world and the spread of civilizations. The legacy of Theras, like many other names in the genealogies, lies in the role his descendants played in shaping the cultural and historical landscape of the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean region.

the'-ras (Thera): The river by which the company assembled in preparation for the march to Jerusalem under Ezra (1 Esdras 8:41, 61). In Ezra 8:21, 31 the name of the river is Ahava. Possibly the place is represented by the modern Hit on the Euphrates; but no certain identification is possible.
